Aeolian Dominant (Hindu Scale)

The Aeolian Dominant Scale is often referred to as the Hindu Scale, and therefore suitable for Indian music. The scale includes a minor seventh interval, which is the reason for it being called “dominant”. This scale can also be referred to as the Major-Minor Scale – the blend of the Major and Minor are noticeable.

The Aeolian Dominant is the fifth mode of the Melodic Minor Scale and similar to the Aeolian Mode except the third note in the scale that is raised one semitone (see interval pattern below). It can also be compared to the Mixolydian Mode, only the sixth note differs, and sometimes named Mixolydian b6. In jazz, the scale can be used for improvise over dominant chords with flattened thirteen, such as 7b13.
