Scales source and guide for musicians
This is one of the most common among Japanese scales (there are other scales sometimes called simply with names such as "Japanese 1" and "Japanese 2"), and often referred to as the Japanese Scale. It is also referred to as "in sen scale" (not to be confused with the "in scale"). See also Hirajoshi , Iwato and Yo.
The scale is built as a pentatonic scale with five notes, which is common for scales used in Japanese music. It is among other things characterized by the flatted second, which it has in common with Iwato Scale and Phrygian Mode (the Japanese 1 can actually be seen as a "pentatonic" version of the Phrygian) .
